BEIRUT: YEAR ZERO

@ARTHAUS BEIRUT, GEMMAYZE

2nd-15th October 2020

Beirut: Following the tragic events of the 4th of August, the material and immaterial needs of the Lebanese people are immense. Arthaus-Beirut has taken the initiative to unite artists, art collectors and art galleries to participate in an unprecedented dual initiative in support of the Lebanese RedCross.

Arthaus Beirut, created by Nabil and Zoe Debs, aims to be a non-profit meeting place for artists of all disciplines to promote cross disciplinary dialogue and an exchange of ideas.

Located in the heart of one of Beirut’s most affected neighbourhoods, Gemmayze, Arthaus-Beirut suffered significant damage. Through its reconstruction it has become a beacon of solidarity and cooperation in the face of the disaster.

The idea of supporting artists and the Lebanese people -through a collective exhibition and subsequent auction-naturally ensued.

50% of the proceeds will be donated to theLebanese Red Cross and 50% will be given to the participating artists.

The donations to the Lebanese Red Cross will contribute to direct financial assistance to 10,000 of the most vulnerable families affected by the Beirut Port explosion, and to the national free ambulance and blood transfusion services which saved so many lives immediately after the disaster.

In 1948, Roberto Rossellini directed “Germany Year Zero” in post-war Berlin— using the local population as actors. His aim was to illustrate survival in the destroyed capital of a failed state; in doing so, his film embodied the social-realism movement. Given the strong parallels one can draw with Beirut today, this film inspired the theme of the exhibition.

Media: Sculptures, Paintings, Installations, Photographs, Engravings, Illustrations, revolution art, street art, music, texts and poetry.
